Stearin and other fat substances have been added increasingly to Paraffin

Due to increasing crude oil-pricing and consequently rising prices for paraffin, a new trend has developed in candle industry, for some years already; Stearin and other fat substances have been added increasingly to Paraffin during the production process to reduce costs for raw material and to remain competitive. However, wax components, Stearin and fat substances affect the stability of the wick and its burning capacity. In order to prevent a loss of the expected high quality while applying the combined system some extremely important aspects have to be considered throughout production.

Should untreated wicks not be sufficient any more…

As Paraffin does not contain any acids that could corrode the wick on the one hand, it is of utmost importance on the other hand to take great care by the use of the acid-containing Stearin, that the wick is adapted exactly to the raw materials and the according mixing ratio; as otherwise the acid-containing Stearin corrodes the wick and reduces burning results.


Challenge for the wick; it has to be protected from the acid-containing Stearin/fat substances – but at the same time also remain permeable for raw materials.


If blended candles are equipped with regular stump wicks, actually designed for Paraffin during production;  acids corrode the wick and i.e. hickeys occur. This reduces burning results, lowers the quality and is not well accepted on the market and may lower your sales margin – less than you want to reckon with. In order to prevent issues like these, we would be happy to cooperate with you to develop the most suitable wick.

Based on the individually contrived requirements in regards to the thread count, the thread density of the wick as well as the string threads and the specific treatment of such – the desired wick is eventually created with the according properties.

By the way – if the composition of the blended candles is changed, it is not necessary to develop a new type of wick in each case! Certain volatilities may arise, however, according to which raw material has been implemented. This is subject to testing in advance in our own laboratory; we assess which components are to be adapted to meet your requirements – or if certain adaptions are required at all!
